Bootleg DVDs and CDs are readily available in China. They are available from "pedaling peddlers", guys who sell cheap discs from a box on the back of a bicycle. They're also available in tacky stores filled with foreign tourists with gleaming eyes. The selection is mind-blowing, though customers looking for a specific title had better find the Chinese name beforehand (perhaps on wikipedia). Even this is no guarantee, because some movie titles have multiple translations.

The average price in Shanghai is 7 RMB, but a DVD-9 can be more than 10. Quality is not guaranteed, and most special features are omitted, but the discs generally work.

Going to the movies or buying legal copies of DVDs is prohibitively expensive for most Chinese. Their impact on Western entertainers' revenues is, of course, deplorable. But pirated DVDs have had tremendous impact on Chinese popular culture by bringing Western mass entertainment into China for the first time in the modern era. Whether this is a good thing depends on your opinion of Titanic, Pearl Harbor, and the Star Wars sextilogy.
